Blue Monday: A Portrait of Weariness and Resilience

Blue Monday (1985) by Annie Lee

Today is the third Monday of January, a day commonly known as Blue Monday, supposedly the most depressing day of the year for some. The origins of this unofficial holiday can be traced back to 2005, when a travel company coined the term in an attempt to boost winter holiday sales. While the concept of Blue Monday may be rooted in marketing, it's undeniable that many people do experience feelings of sadness, fatigue, and low motivation around this time of year.

In 1985, American artist Annie Lee (1935-2014) created a powerful painting titled "Blue Monday" that perfectly captures the essence of this day. Lee, known for her depictions of African-American life, presents a faceless woman sitting slouched on the edge of her bed, enveloped in a sea of blue. The woman's slumped posture conveys a sense of exhaustion and despair, emotions that many can relate to on Mondays. Despite the painting's sombre mood, there's an underlying message of resilience and hope. The woman's position on the edge of the bed suggests that she's about to rise, ready to face the day ahead. This act of getting out of bed, even when it feels like the hardest thing to do, is a symbol of strength and determination.

Lee’s own life experience adds further depth to this artwork. She worked as a clerk on the Chicago railroads for many years, experiencing firsthand the drudgery and monotony of a 9-to-5 job. Blue Monday is a reflection of her own feelings on those early mornings when she had to drag herself out of bed to go to work. Despite the challenges she faced, Lee never gave up on her dreams. While working full-time, she put herself through graduate school, eventually earning a Master's degree. She also dedicated herself to her art, finding solace and expression in her paintings. Annie Lee's story is a testament to the human spirit's ability to overcome adversity. Despite facing personal tragedies, including the loss of two husbands and a child, she persevered, pursuing her passions and making a positive impact on the world.

On this Blue Monday, let us remember Annie Lee's resilience and determination. Let us also remember that while life may throw us curveballs, we have the strength to overcome them. If we can get out of bed, even on the toughest of days, we can take a step towards a brighter future.
